The Centre for the Humanities in co-operation with the Gender Graduate Programme and Media and Culture Studies hosts a second round of the seminar on Cultural Theory. The seminar is a close-reading seminar, which focuses on texts that are valuable to the humanities as a whole and is open to scholars, students and people working outside of academia.

Theme two: Immanent Spaces, Immanent Times

Our new theme searches for ways in which time and space are not given materialities, as in Newtonian physics, but are actualized and realized through events. From architectonics to science, from philosophy to theories on social complexity, we traverse all parts of academia in order to question these two Aristotelian concepts that have proven themselves so fundamental for thought.

BLIK, het academische studententijdschrift over audiovisuele cultuur van het Departement Media- en Cultuurwetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht, brengt in mei 2009 een speciale editie uit met het thema ‘Tijd’. Dit naar aanleiding van het dan honderdjarige bestaan van een voor heel Nederland geldende wettelijke tijdsaanduiding. Voor dit nummer is BLIK op zoek naar bijdragen vanuit verschillende perspectieven en disciplines die media benaderen in relatie tot het concept van tijd (en ruimte).

Starting Thursday September 18, the Centre for the Humanities will launch a new seminar on contemporary cultural theory. The idea for the seminar was conceived by Rick Dolphijn and Iris van der Tuin (both at Media and Cultural Studies) who will chair the sessions.

In the seminar we plan to (close) read texts that are valuable to the humanities as a whole. As such, the seminar differs from the Deleuze seminar and Why Theatre (since we read more broadly) as well as What’s Cooking and the Media seminar (as we do not focus on our own work). We would like the seminar to be open to anyone interested; colleagues, PhD students, BA/ MA/ RMA students, but also those who work outside of academia are more than welcome. [Lees verder →]

Het debat over het huidig functioneren en toekomstperspectieven van de Bachelor CIW pruttelt voort. Menig student, docent en anderzijds betrokkene wil het instituut CIW van een nieuw behangetje voorzien of van de grond af opnieuw opbouwen. Een zinvol debat is echter niet mogelijk zonder te weten op welke fundamenten de opleiding rust.

Paul van den Hoven (foto), die nauw bij de oprichting van CIW betrokken is geweest, weet dat wel. Hij legt uit wat CIW voor hem inhoudt en geeft inzicht in de grondbeginselen van waaruit de studie is ontstaan. ‘Bij CIW leer je geen pasklare oplossingen toe te passen.’ [Lees verder →]

A couple weeks back most of us shut down for a well deserved R and R summer session. The blog itself has been rather quiet as well. In the midst of my own first break since almost two years, I’ve decided to return briefly to this blog to promote the greatest opportunity one has during the course of your studies at Utrecht University: the study abroad program (see the website Bureau Buitenland)

In a few weeks time I’m going to head off to the University of California – San Diego to study there for a semester as part of the MA. During my BA Communication Studies I had to good fortune of exchanging to the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The credits I received were directed at the BA diploma I ended up getting from the UU. It serviced the requirement of the “profilering ruimte” and I received the credits by an application process through the Board of Examiners. It’s actually not as much hassle as it sounds. If you have a good idea of what courses you are going to be taking, you can apply beforehand for permission to guarantee that all credits are rewarded, saves stressing out when you get back.

The discussions surrounding CIW have focused on the curriculum, touched on the “zesje cultuur” and concerned itself with the relatively unmotivated student attitude. But little time has been spent questioning the competency of professors as educators. Odd because, to a great extent, students in their “attitude” and general performance reflect the capacities of their educators.

During a conversation with a course coordinator I grew increasingly fed up with his complaining about students, especially since he was a mediocre/lousy teacher. I couldn’t help but ask at a certain stage: do you even enjoy teaching? It caught him off guard and it took him a while to respond. The fact that it took him so long fueled my hypothesis formulated almost six years ago that has long persisted the test of time: with a few exceptions, researchers don’t like teaching! Donderdag 12 juni is het tijd voor het CIW-debat. Dit zal plaatsvinden op Drift 21 van 17.30 tot 19.00 uur. Tijdens dit debat zal er gesproken worden over de kern van Communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen. De docenten willen graag jullie mening horen. Daarnaast is er ruimte om over onderwerpen betreffende CIW te praten en te debatteren.

Het is belangrijk om jullie stem te laten horen en daarom willen wij jullie van harte uitnodigen om deel te nemen aan dit debat. Wij hopen velen van jullie te mogen ontvangen op 12 juni. Na het debat bestaat er een mogelijkheid om, op eigen kosten, mee te gaan eten. Op deze manier kan het CIW-debat op een gezellige manier worden afgesloten.

Vandaag is de uitslag van de Faculteitsraad verkiezingen bekendgemaakt. Lijst Stuff heeft het uitstekend gedaan en we hebben nipt gewonnen. Wij willen bij deze alvast iedereen bedanken voor de stemmen die we hebben gekregen! Binnenkort meer informatie over de verkiezingen en de komende periode veel meer nieuws vanuit de Faculteitsraad.
