In de voorbereiding van de avond kwamen 4 thema’s naar voren:
- voorbereiding op de arbeidsmarkt;
- toetsing;
- aansluiting bij het vwo;
- de relevantie van programma-onderdelen;

Over elk van deze thema’s zal één van de studenten een korte inleiding verzorgen waarna het gesprek geopend wordt. Natuurlijk zullen we daarbij niet over het hoofd zien dat er op verschillende van de genoemde thema’s inmiddels al het nodige gebeurt, zoals de bijdrage van het nieuwe 1e jaar aan de samenhang van het programma, de invoering van het ‘college’-model voor de aansluitingsproblemen, en het studyload model voor de contacturen.

Naast het ontwikkelen van een Open Leeromgeving (http://www.mediavergelijking.nl) zijn we bezig met het ontwikkelen van een totaaloplossing voor de Universitaire Medezeggenschap. Het onderwijsdiscussieplatform PubliekeSfeer.nl kende haar hoogtepunt in 2007: drie jaar later zal een nieuwe, verbeterde formule (http://www.eenbeterefaculteit.nl) het medezeggenschapssysteem voorgoed moeten veranderen in een optimistische, efficiënte en toegankelijke kennisgemeenschap.

In september gaat er weer een nieuwe ploeg van start. Ook jij kunt je verkiesbaar stellen. Ben jij een enthousiaste student die zich wil inzetten voor studentenbelangen, stel je dan verkiesbaar! Ervaring met medezeggenschap (bijvoorbeeld lidmaatschap in een opleidingscommissie) of ervaring in een commissie bij een studievereniging kan handig zijn, maar dit hoeft niet: we zijn op zoek naar een diverse groep kandidaten!

De tijdsbesteding varieert, maar is gemiddeld zo’n vijf uur per week. Het is een uitgelezen kans om binnen een complexe organisatie als de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen organisatorische ervaring op te doen. De universiteit stelt voor het raadswerk een vergoeding beschikbaar.

Kom naar onze informatiebijeenkomst op dinsdag 3 maart om 17.00 in de Sweelinckzaal van Drift 21. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst krijg je meer te horen over wat het raadswerk concreet inhoudt en op welke manier je je verkiesbaar kan stellen. Ook zal het systeem van de verkiezingen met lijsten nader worden toegelicht.

Als je je verkiesbaar wil stellen, kun je dat bij ons per e-mail opgeven voor woensdagavond 11 maart. Hou deze avond vrij, er is dan gelegenheid om een lijst te vormen. Als studentengeleding helpen we je graag bij het opstellen van lijsten en het invullen van formulieren. Deze formulieren moeten een week later, op 19 maart, officieel ingediend zijn bij de secretaris van de kiescommissie, Nelleke Bouma.

Verkiezingen
Van 11 tot 18 mei 2009 zullen dan uiteindelijk de verkiezingen plaatsvinden, tezamen met de verkiezingen voor de universiteitsraad. Alle studenten van de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen hebben stemrecht voor deze verkiezingen.

The Centre for the Humanities in co-operation with the Graduate Gender Programme and Media and Culture Studies hosts a third round of the seminar on Cultural Theory. The seminar is a close-reading seminar, which focuses on texts that are valuable to the humanities as a whole and is open to scholars, students and people working outside of academia. In the sessions we do not build up knowledge, which means that you can join in whenever you like. Yet we work with themes in order to structure our thoughts a little bit. Earlier we have discussed “naturecultures” and “immanent times/ immanent spaces”. We hope many of you will be interested in contributing to our discussions. The reading material can be copied at Kromme nieuwegracht 20 (cursuspostvakken; ground floor) and at Janskerkhof 13 (OGC secretariat).

Theme three: Linguistics/signification/communication

The third theme of the Cultural Theory seminar is all about language, how it works and especially how it is connected to materiality. New materialist thinking – which is explored in much of the texts we read in earlier themes – is quite skeptical about the idea that language is our access to any kind of understanding or experience, an idea still dominant in much of the humanities. By critiquing the linguistic turn, we should of course rethink matter and materiality (as we did in previous themes). But we cannot stop there. It is of equal importance to come up with new conceptualizations of expression in general and language in particular. In order to do this we tried to mix influential texts in the field with new important ideas continuing these traits.

Er komen dan ook mensen uit het bedrijfsleven (Willem Hendrikx van Communicatiebureau Hendrikx en Van der Spek) en Martin Jansen (Hoofd communicatie Gemeente Utrecht), die niet alleen een inleiding houden over hun ervaringen met eerdere generaties masters communicatie, maar ook graag al jullie vragen beantwoorden. En interessante studenten die een master communicatie van een andere universiteit doen. Daarnaast kun je de masterstudenten naar hun ervaringen vragen.

Theme two: Immanent Spaces, Immanent Times

Our new theme searches for ways in which time and space are not given materialities, as in Newtonian physics, but are actualized and realized through events. From architectonics to science, from philosophy to theories on social complexity, we traverse all parts of academia in order to question these two Aristotelian concepts that have proven themselves so fundamental for thought.

Mogelijke voorstellen zouden betrekking kunnen hebben op hoe de technologische mediatie van tijd (waarbij bijvoorbeeld horloges fungeren als media van tijd) in historisch variërende mate een subjectivering van individuen teweeg hebben gebracht, of welke invloed de invoering van een algemeen geldende tijd heeft gehad op de conceptualisering van de wereldlijke netwerksamenleving. Een verdere verdieping van de relatie tussen gemedieerde tijd en ruimte zou kunnen argumenteren dat de conceptualisering van gemechaniseerde tijd heeft geleid tot een scheiding tussen tijd en ruimte, welke van beide concepten in de menselijke bevatting ledige begrippen maakten. Reeds vermelde voorstellen zijn uiteraard enkel suggesties. BLIK moedigt voorstellen aan welke het thema vanuit originele invalshoeken weten te benaderen. 
 
Geïnteresseerde studenten en academici wordt gevraagd om voorstellen (van ongeveer 500 woorden) voor artikelen in te sturen voor woensdag 20 december. Een artikel telt maximaal 4.000 woorden en mag in het Nederlands of Engels geschreven worden. Vóór 29 december hoor je of je voorstel is geaccepteerd door de redactie.

CALL FOR PAPERS: special theme issue ‘Time’
BLIK: journal for audiovisual culture
May 2009
 
BLIK, the academic student journal for audiovisual culture of the Department of Media and Culture Studies of Utrecht University, will publish a special edition themed ‘Time’ in May 2009. Reason for this special theme publication is the one hundred year jubilee of the introduction of the legally applicable standard time for the whole of the Netherlands. BLIK invites students and academics to send in article proposals from different perspectives and disciplines approaching media from the concept of time (and space). 
 
Proposals could for instance vary from historical perspectives on how technological mediators of time (watches for instance functioning as media of time) in varied means subjected individuals, to papers which argue how the introduction of the standard global time aided in the conceptualization of the global network society. A further exploration of the relation between mediated time and space may argue how the conceptualization of mechanized time lead to a separation between time and space, making both concepts empty phenomena in human comprehension. Above mentioned examples are of course mere suggestions. BLIK encourages proposals which approach the theme from challenging and insightful perspectives. 
 
Interested students and academics are invited to send in their article proposals (approximately 500 words) for this theme issue before the 20th of December. The definitive articles should be no longer than 4.000 words. Articles may be written in Dutch or English. Students and academics will be informed no later than December 29th on whether their proposal is accepted.

In the seminar we plan to (close) read texts that are valuable to the humanities as a whole. As such, the seminar differs from the Deleuze seminar and Why Theatre (since we read more broadly) as well as What’s Cooking and the Media seminar (as we do not focus on our own work). We would like the seminar to be open to anyone interested; colleagues, PhD students, BA/ MA/ RMA students, but also those who work outside of academia are more than welcome.

If you would like to attend the only thing we ask of you is to read the text we are about to discuss with the greatest care (don’t worry, they are all of exceptionally high level, so they are good to read). You are not asked to attend all meetings. They do not compose a whole, nor do they build up knowledge in that one text is a necessary introduction to the one following. There are no credits to be given, there are no lectures planned. We just like to read good texts. And we would like you to join in.

First Theme: Naturecultures: Materialist Explorations of the Embodied Mind

As a start we propose a series of key texts that show how we as cultured humans are always already in nature and how nature is necessarily cultured. As opposed to the transcendental and humanist traditions that never stop haunting us, these texts propose materialist perspectives that travel the fluxes of matter and mind, body and soul, nature and culture.
